This years 5K race is dedicated to the memory of three Old Orchard Beach residents who contributed much to our community; Cheryl Rague, Antoinette "Toni" Bill and Arlene "Deni" Fitzgerald.
Cheryl Rague was engaged in many community services and positions including serving on the Old Orchard Beach Town Council, the PTO, and other parent and child centered local activities. She loved spending summers and winters at the family lakehouse on Little Sebago Lake along with enjoying the beauty of the ocean at her adopted home town of Old Orchard Beach. Cheryl also spent a good portion of her life attending her four children's sporting events including field hockey, basketball, baseball, track and soccer. Cheryl was the quintessential sports mom.
She was an employee of both Jameson and Loranger Schools in Old Orchard Beach.
Toni Bill was a lifelong member of the AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary Unit 5 of Old Orchard Beach and held the posts as president, vice president and treasurer over the years. She volunteered for the voting polls for all elections for Old Orchard Beach and sang in the St. Margaret’s choir for Mass and special services. She loved to sing “Amazing Grace” while in the choir. She was also involved with the parish’s CCD program, the Ladies Sodality and was instrumental in establishing the Mercy Meal program of the parish.
Deni Fitzgerald graduated first in her class from Old Orchard Beach High School in 1943. She later went on to graduate from Gorham State Teachers College and taught seventh grade math for over 25 years in the Old Orchard Beach School system. In addition, Deni coached the OOB girls' basketball team to several championships and was later acknowledged as having the most successful team in the state during the 1940's. She was recently inducted into the OOB Alumni Hall of Fame.
The Fun Run is sponsored by the Golzbein family, owners of the OOB Pier, in memory of their parents, Nat and Marilyn Golzbein. All proceeds of the two races will go to the MAPS Educational Scholarship Foundation which provides scholarships to OOBHS graduates continuing on with their education.
